Reading & Literature Circles

In addition to working in the 5th grade reading book and PSSA workbook, we will be working in Literature Circles. How this works is that your child will choose from several books which one they would like to read. By the end of the year your child will have read at least 4 books--1 per marking period--for the Circles. They will be given a reading assignment, which will be several chapters. This assignment will be due by the next Literature Circle meeting. At these meetings there will be a short comprehension quiz. These quizzes will be in short answer format. Following the quiz, we will meet in small groups with other students who are reading the same book to discuss what we've read. They will also be required to bring their bookmark, which is a small piece of paper where they will write 3 short notes about their reading assignment (this will be explained in greater detail during the first week of school).

Literature Circles will meet at least once per week.

The comprehension quizzes will be a large part of the reading grade so it's important that the reading assignment be completed on time. Bookmarks will also be graded. When your child finishes their book, the bookmarks will be averaged together for a final bookmark grade. If your child does not read the assignment, they will not do well on the bookmarks, which will bring their grade down significantly.
