Social Studies

For this class, your child will be required to keep a notebook, which will be graded and counted toward their final test score for each chapter. The notebook will hold all notes, which will be given in class, and homework assignments. The homework assignments will be 2 or 3 questions that follow every lesson. These questions are not difficult and all answers can be found in the lesson. Also included in the notebook will be the new vocabulary words for each lesson.

Each chapter will have a map that we will complete in class together. The map must be kept in the notebook until it is graded. The map will be on the test. I will have the students put a star next to the most important information (basically, everything that will be on the test). This should make studying easier. I will always write the essay questions on the board before the test so the students can prepare them ahead of time.

There will also be a take home test for each chapter, which you can help your child complete at home. These tests are designed to be very easy and all the answers are found in the book basically word for word. The difficult part of this for the students is turning it in on time. They will lose 20 points each day the test is late. It will count as a regular test grade, and is an easy way to pull up low grades. After the test is graded I will average the chapter test, the take home test, and the notebook grade together for a final grade for the chapter.

I do ask that each child have a box of 16 or more crayons for social studies class. We will use these for our maps. It makes it much easier to memorize the states if each state is a different color.
