Spring
has sprung and the middle school flourishing with activity.
Below are some field trips that the students attended during
the first week of May:
• The 6th
Grade took a field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo on May 6th.
This was a culminating activity to an interdisciplinary
project.
• On Wednesday, May 7th our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade
students participated in the Environthon at the Environmental
Center.
• On Thursday, May 8th, the 8th grade students went
to Jim Thorpe to tour the Asa Packer Mansion, the old Jail,
and Mauch Chunk Museum. This connects to a local history
unit.
• Our Life Skills students participated in the Zoo
and Jim Thorpe trip as well as their own CBI trip to Heisler’s
Dairy Bar.
The 5th graders
were invited to tour the middle school on May 7th. Students
had the opportunity to tour the building, meet their 6th
grade teachers, watch a video about being successful in
middle school, and ate their lunch in our cafeteria. It
was a great opportunity for them to spend some time and
feel welcome to the building for next year. The upcoming
5th grade students took placement tests last week. The information
gained from these tests along with recommendations from
the 5th grade teachers will allow for more accurate placement
in classes.
The Student Council
held the final dance of the year on May 9th. This year had
a luau theme and students had a great evening. Thank you
to all the teachers who chaperoned.
Ms. Pauline Davis
rewarded 56 middle school students with an ice cream party
on May 9th. These students reached the goal of 25 AR points
for the 3rd marking period. Great job on this accomplishment
and keep reading.
On May 13th,
the middle school band entertained parents and the community
with their popular song selections at this year’s
spring concert. It was obvious from their performance that
the students really love playing in the band. Great Job!
The middle school
hosted the Health and Wellness fair for the district on
May 15th. A committee planned the event to help Mrs. Maurer
roll out the nutrition guidelines for next year. The art
teachers provided student art work to showcase during the
evening. The
Department of
Health, Penn State Cooperative Extension, American Cancer
Society, JROTC, St. Lukes, Panther Valley gym teachers and
nurses all participated in the event.
The student of
PVMS went above and beyond with their effort for the Relay
for Life Team. The middle school held a penny war competition
to raise money. Homerooms were assigned themes and students
decorated their doors and dressed in their theme for a mini
relay held in the gym on May 16th. Our middle school presented
a check to the American Cancer Society in the amount of
$1680.93. We are so proud of the effort of our students.
Mr. Charley DePuy
took 30 students to area cemeteries to place flags on gravesites
as a community service project. The students observed Memorial
Day with a short program on Tuesday, May 27th at the flag
pole. Mr. Josh Wank, 7th grade history teacher, said a few
words about Memorial Day and asked for a moment of silence
in memory of our veterans. Three students, Greg Danchak,
Danielle Laub, and Jacinda Razicka read poems and middle
school band played two patriotic selections.
The middle school
band and chorus members enjoyed a trip to Knoebles Grove
on May 28th. This was a reward for all their hard work and
dedication throughout the year at concerts and parades.
Black Gold and
White Day was held on May 30th. This year was warm and sunny!
Thank you to all staff members for going above and beyond
their normal daily duties to make this day a success. The
Black team was once again victorious!
Throughout the
month of May, 8th grade teachers along with guidance counselor,
Lisa Ogozalek met with all 8th grade students and their
parents for an hour to discuss Career Pathways and build
their 9th grade schedule. This was made possible through
the Partner’s for Progress Grant. It was a beneficial
program and we had positive feedback from both the parents
and teachers.
Congratulations
to the students of the month for May:
6th grade – Danielle Laub
7th grade – Leslie Moser
8th grade – Angelina Mistretta
