St. Luke’s Adopt a School Program at Panther Valley School District

WHO and WHAT:  St. Luke’s University Health Network (SLUHN) Miners Campus partners with the Panther Valley School District in the Adopt a School Program.  The Adopt a School Program uses the school district as a hub in the community to improve the health and educational outcomes of the students. Local School Coordinators and Community Leadership Committees assess, evaluate and guide the initiatives.  St. Luke’s evidence based programs/services include:

  • Mobile Youth Health Services (Connecting Students to Medical, Dental & Vision Vans, Insurance, Physical & Behavioral Health Assessments and Services)
  • Mental Health Programs (Adolescent Depression Awareness, Substance Abuse Prevention and Healthy Relationship Programs)
  • Healthy Living Initiatives (Tail on the Trail, Live Your Life, School Gardens, Nutrition and Health Education Programs)
  • Literacy Programs (Dr. Seuss Day, Little Free Libraries and free access to books throughout the year for all)
  • Youth Development and Career Mentoring

WHEN:  Throughout the year different programs occur for different grades and district wide while community outreach to connect students and families to care occurs on a consistent basis.

WHY:  Every three years St. Luke’s conducts a Community Health Needs Assessment where we have found Adolescent Health, Mental Health, Access to Care (medical, dental, vision, insurance), Chronic Disease Prevention & Management and Elder Health as the priority needs.

What this means to St. Luke’s Miners President Bill Moyer:  With Adopt a School, we provide services where people are. Students, families and even faculty and staff have easy access to important preventative health services.  Working with our partners, we collaboratively customize those services to meet their unique needs.  There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that St. Luke’s is helping students to be more ready to learn by  providing mental health, glasses, preventive medicine or whatever support the family or student needs.

What this means to Panther Valley Superintendent Dennis Kergick: The St. Luke’s Adopt a School Program exemplifies all of the good that exists in Carbon and Schuylkill Counties. It is refreshing to be a part of many positive events and the services provided to our school district, students and families. It has been an absolute blessing for Panther Valley.

Adopt a School Vision: Partnering in our community to connect and assist individuals and families in navigating the health care system, and to promote and improve physical and mental health, so that every individual has the opportunity to maximize their health and educational outcomes leading to happier, healthier and longer lives.

Adopt a School Mission: The mission of the Adopt a School program is to create an environment where the school district is the hub to cultivate the physical and mental well-being of individuals and families in our community through collaborative partnerships, using evidence based programs, to connect families to health services (medical, dental, vision, mental health and insurance) while promoting healthy living initiatives, literacy and leadership to improve the health and educational outcomes of students.
